LOOK GOOD . . . FEEL BETTER
Look Good... Feel Better (LGFB) is a free, national public service program which is designed to help women cancer patients learn how to cope with the appearance side-effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments by teaching them techniques to help restore their appearance and self-esteem through the use of make-up, wigs, scarves, and other accessories. LGFB is a collaboration between the American Cancer Society, National Cosmetology Association and the Personal Care Products Council Foundation.
Each two-hour, hands-on workshop includes a 12-step skin care/make-up application lesson, demonstration of options for dealing with hair loss, and nail care techniques. Held at Riverview Hospital, this program is facilitated by LGFB-certified cosmetologists and organized by UW Cancer Center-Riverview staff. Patients in various stages of treatment receive make-over tips and personal attention from professionals trained to meet their needs. They also use and take home complimentary cosmetic kits in their appropriate skin tones (light, medium, dark, extra dark) with helpful instruction booklets. Professional advice is provided on wigs, scarves and accessories. More than 50,000 individuals participate each year in small groups of five to ten, offering each patient a supportive circle, as well. Group programs represent the highest level of expertise available (the "gold standard") in LGFB services.
Upcoming dates for the Look Good... Feel Better program offered at the UW Cancer Center-Riverview in 2010 are: October 11 and December 13.
